OK. You've built
a great website and have gotten it online.
Now what?
Just
having a site online is not the end. You have
to do a little self promotion to advertise your
new site to the rest of the world. You have to
give people a way to find your web site.
On
the Internet, it primarily starts with Search
Engines. Search Engines, like Google, Yahoo, AltaVista,
and others are websites that catalog the content
of virtually every web page on the Internet. As
you might imagine, with millions and millions
of web pages around the world, the task is colossal.
And if that wasn't a big enough challenge, the
Internet is constantly changing... new web sites
added (like your's), pages added and deleted,
and content is always on the move. Search engine
computers must work non-stop just to attempt
to keep up.
All
of this information collected about all of the
world's web pages is added to massive databases.
Google, for example, makes it look so simple.
When you type in the word "auburn",
their computers look through all of their databases
searching for all of the web pages located in
all of the web server in the entire world that
contain the word auburn. Google then
makes a nice looking list and returns the results
back to your web browser for you to look at...
all in the blink of an eye.
Unfortunately,
a Google search for all web pages that contain
the word auburn will likely return millions
of entries. But, what if your brand new web site
just happen to get listed on Google search result
page 357,448? Your website might be technically
"included" in the Google search, but
no one is likely to flip through all of the result
pages to find it.
The
Mission It
is said that most people will only look through
the first three or four pages of a search to find
what they are looking for. Having your website
listed high with the major search engines is an
absolute necessity to bring traffic to your site.
Your mission, then, in your Site Promotion efforts,
is to somehow get your new website included in
the first few pages of a Google (and others) search.
CapeRock
can help There are
things that can be done to get more prominent
listings in the Search Engines. Depending on the
importance that your place on your site's placement,
you can "buy" your way up the list or
you can structure the "code" of your
newly created web pages to assist the search engine
computers in their cataloging process. While the
second method is free, it can sometimes take months
to get listed. Either way, we can help.
